The optical network has an optical network unit (ONU) that is formed in such a manner that an upstream clock that is used for an upstream signal is derived from a downstream clock (TD) that is used for a downstream-signal in a phase locked manner. The optical line terminal (OLT) is formed in such a manner that clock recycling is effected with a phase locked reference signal derived from the downstream clock by using phasing comparison of the upstream signal. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an arrangement for clock recycling in a passive optical network (2) a method for clock recycling in a passive optical network.
