The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for detecting materials by means of fast neutrons and a continuous spectral X-ray. The method according to the invention comprises the following steps: a) a fast neutron bundle and a continuous spectral x-ray beam for transilluminating the object to be inspected are each generated by a fast neutron source or an x-ray source, b) the intensity of the x-ray and fast neutron bundle is determined directly by an x-ray detector array or measured from a neutron detector array; and c) the material from the object to be inspected is detected by means of a contour curve formed by the attenuation difference between the neutron beam shining through the different materials of the object to be inspected and the X-ray beam radiating through the different materials of the object to be inspected is. The continuous spectral X-ray beam has strong penetration capability so that the material can be detected when the container is full and the item to be inspected is thick. The following advantages are achieved in the present invention: The design of the device is simple, the image is clear and the accuracy of the current detection is high.
