The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for detecting materials by means of fast neutrons and a continuous spectral X-ray. The method according to the invention comprises the following steps: a) a fast neutron bundle and a continuous spectral x-ray beam for transilluminating the object to be inspected are each generated by a fast neutron source or an x-ray source, b) the intensity of the x-ray and fast neutron bundle is determined directly by an x-ray detector array or measured from a neutron detector array; and c) the material from the object to be inspected is detected by means of a contour curve formed by the attenuation difference between the neutron beam shining through the different materials of the object to be inspected and the X-ray beam radiating through the different materials of the object to be inspected is. The continuous spectral X-ray beam has strong penetration capability so that the material can be detected when the container is full and the item to be inspected is thick.
