The system has a high pressure unit and a connected nozzle device (19) for forming a high pressure water jet (23'), supporting elements (18) for transverse movement of the nozzle device, a water collection arrangement (22) on the opposite side of the cover from the nozzle device for cutting the material against the unsupported cover and for maintaining the cover. The nozzle device has one or more needle nozzles (23) for both cutting the material and maintaining the cover with one and the same water jet. An independent claim is also included for a method of cutting material and maintaining cover in strip material manufacturing machines.
