Tractor-towed machinery for splitting logs, and other longitudinal timber, has swing arms with cutting blades at their ends moved steadily and increasing towards each other during splitting
The towed machinery, for splitting logs, has a splitting nipper structure (2) with two semi-circular arms (1,1a) fitted with blades (5,5a) at their ends. The arms swing against each other on axes (12,12a), with a drive to move the blades against each other when the arms are closed. The large gap between the swing axes gives the nipper structure an elliptical shape with closed arms. As the arms are moved, the blades move steadily and increasingly in the splitting direction. Friction-reduction sliding rollers (6,6a) are at the blades away from the cutting sides during splitting.
