The generator has a controller (7) provided for controlling field current flowing in a field winding (31) of a rotor (3). A pulley is coupled to a shaft by an overrunning clutch. The clutch is configured in such a manner that it idles, when the rotational speed of the pulley is lower than the rotational speed of the rotor. The controller is configured in such a manner that it compulsorily increases the field current on a temporary basis, when an upward switching operation of a transmission of a vehicle is accomplished.
