Process for open die forging of a workpiece (1) with a forging press (2) having a hydraulic piston/cylinder system (4) connected to a forging tool (3), and oil infeed (5) and removal (6) pipes. To provide for motion of the forging tool during the loading phase hydraulic oil is fed to the piston/cylinder system, and to obtain the desired end forming of the workpiece during an unloading phase this phase is started at a specific point in time, and during unloading a specific system parameter (s, p) of the forging tool and/or the piston/cylinder system is adhered to, and this parameter is determined by numerical simulation with a substitute model. Independent claims are included for: (1) forging press (2) a device with a sensor for sensing the motion of the piston/cylinder system.
