The method involves retarding a traction sheave in an upward drive of a lift cage so that a supporting rope is slipped over the traction sheave. A brake acceleration arising at a counterweight, the lift cage and/or supporting rope is detected. Drivability is determined from the mass of the counterweight, the mass of the lift cage and normal case acceleration, based on a preset equation.
