The exchanger has exhaust gas pipes (3) arranged in a housing casing (2), where a liquid coolant flows around the casing. The pipes have ends (3a, 3b) which are held by pipe bases (7, 8), where the pipes are designed as flat pipes. The pipe ends open out at a side of the pipes to form a rectangular cross section, and are soldered with the pipe bases. The pipe ends have longitudinal sides, which are arranged in parallel. An independent claim is also included for a method of producing a heat exchanger.
