The generator has an ignition device chamber and a diffuser portion (40) connected to respective opening portions of a cylindrical housing. A rupturable plate closes between the housing and the ignition device chamber, and another rupturable plate (48) closes between the housing and diffuser portion. A rod (54) ruptures the plate (48) to open a path to the diffuser portion. The rod includes a central portion (54b) and a distal end portion (54c) having a flat surface (54d) which faces the plate (48), where an outer diameter of the distal end portion is larger than that of the central portion.
