The check of the pump condition is performed in several steps. A parameter for the pressure and the flow is determined at first. The parameter is compared to at least one reference value or a reference range which has to be an information of interest in relation to the particular check. The parameter is a characterization of the pulsation of the pressure and/or the flow within a particular interval, and the determined value is a pulsation quotient. Independent claims are given for a sensor for performing the process and a diagnostic device incorporating the sensor.
