The filter comprises a housing (10) with a filter element (1) which has blind bores (2) leading from one surface (4) to the exhaust supply and blind bores (3) leading from the opposite surface (5) to the exhaust discharge. The bores are off-set relative to one another and the distances (a) between the two sets of bores are identical to the distances between the ends of the bores and their relevant adjoining surfaces. The filter element is made from open-pore foamed ceramic or woven wire or other suitable material. It can be integrated in a catalyst or silencer.
