The tool changing device has a tool carrier (12, 14), a tool shop (34) with several tool stock piles (40), and a tool provisioning mechanism for communication between the tool shop and the carrier. The tool provisioning mechanism has two mobile control devices (74, 76) which allow the tools to be transported. The control devices are movable independent of each other. An independent claim is included for a machine tool.
