Automatic feeder has staple magazine (7) to take objects (6) such as printed products and installation to take objects out of magazine and put them in the feed area on picking section. Installation has at least one slide (10) with holding device (12) on one end having suction head (13) to take object out of magazine. Slide can be pivoted around a turning axis (14) vertical to the entry belt using a turning drive, and the holder (12) can be slid in the direction of the lengthwise axis (15) of the feeder using a linear drive so that the holder can move from its base position, in which the object is taken and held by suction head. It is then pulled back into an intermediate position and pivoted into a holding position in which the object lies above feed area. Next, it is lowered onto feed area after a pre-determined time and finally swung back into base position.
