The device comprises: ventricular and atrial pacing means; ventricular event detection means (R, r) operating with the application of a safety window following atrial stimulation; mode switching means, conditionally controlling the switchover of the device from AAI to DDD; and means for diagnosing atrioventricular conduction disorder, determining the occurrence of atrioventricular block from a sequence of atrial events (A) not followed, during the duration of an escape interval auricular, of a corresponding ventricular event detection (R) outside the security window. It also comprises means for discriminating ventricular events, detecting the occurrence of at least one ventricular event (r) in the safety window in the absence of atrioventricular block detected by the conduction disorder diagnostic means, and allowing to document mode switching or to inhibit it under certain conditions.
