The method involves producing a transmitting wave that meets an object and is reflected on the object. A signal (SRrf) representing the transmitting wave is produced. A reflection wave produced by the reflection of the transmitting wave is received. A signal (SRr) representing the reflection wave is produced. The signals (SRrf, SRr) are processed to obtain signals (SArf, SAr) having the same amplitude. The processed signals are compared with a predetermined threshold (TH) to produce a measuring signal representing the distance between a telemetry device and the object. An independent claim is also included for a motor vehicle comprising a lighting device and/or a headlight equipped with a telemetry device.
