The starter has a shock absorbing assembly (13) comprising three absorption units that are disposed in series on a torque transmission path. The absorption units are formed by cases (23 - 26) and pads (27). Each pad deforms elastically in a direction around the torque transmission path, when it is subjected to an impact torque, for absorbing the impact torque. A torque limiter (12) is placed upstream the assembly and interrupts the transmission of a torque, exceeding an engine starting torque, from the assembly towards an electric motor (5) of the starter.
