The method involves using a temperature sensor (80) to monitor if the fuel is ignited already in an exhaust gas pipe (20), of an internal combustion engine (1) e.g. e.g. diesel engine, in the upstream of a catalyst (40) or a particle filter (50). The sensor is installed in the upstream of the catalyst in the direction of the pipe. The fuel is monitored by comparing the increase in temperature measured at the catalyst with an increase in temperature calculated based on an exhaust gas temperature model. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling or regulating the speed of combustion of carbon black in an internal combustion engine.
