The method involves analyzing perturbations, affecting a supply voltage present permanently in a vehicle, by taking into account a low-frequency noise affecting the supply voltage, where the supply voltage is taken on a cable supplying a cigar lighter of the vehicle. A binary signal (14) representative of an engine state of the vehicle is delivered according to the analysis of perturbations. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for detecting on/off state of an engine (2) a vehicle comprising a unit for detecting on/off state of the engine.
