The procedure for fitting at least part of a retractable roof (15) comprising at least one rigid component (15a, 15b) to the body (3) of a motor vehicle consists of pre-assembling the rigid component(s), articulated arms (23), shafts and plates with a supporting structure which is positioned over the opening of a stowing chamber that receives the folded roof. Part of the supporting structure is engaged with the chamber opening to centre it relative to guides, and the folded sub-assembly is then lowered into the chamber.
