New mineral particles having surface modified by grafting with a silane compound useful as fillers in polymer compositions e.g. in thermoplastic polymer matrices
Mineral particles (A) having surface modified by grafting with a silane compound (I), are new. Mineral particles (A) having surface modified by grafting with a silane compound (I) of formula (Sil)-A-B1-S-C(=S)-OR, are new. Sil : silane group of formula (RaO)(RbO)(RcO)Si-, susceptible to react with surface particles to form a covalent bond; Ra-Rc1-4C alkyl; A : a divalent hydrocarbon radical, preferably alkylene, alkenylene or alkynylene; B1divalent hydrocarbon carrying groups ensuring the stabilization of the radical of formula ((Sil)-A-B1.), preferably -Ar1-CHR1- or -Z-C(=O)-CHR1-; Ar1aryl; R1H, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, acyl, acyloxy, acyloxycarbonyl or CN; Z : O, S or -NR2 (preferred); R2H or optionally substituted hydrocarbon (preferably alkyl); and R : a hydrocarbon chain optionally containing a heteroatom, preferably alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, acyl, aralkyl or alkylaryl or a carbonaceous cycle or a heterocycle and optionally aromatic. Independent claims are included for: (1) the preparation of (A); (2) a silane compound (Ia) of formula (RaO)(RbO)(RcO)Si-A-Ar1-CH(R1)-S-C(=S)-OR, useful in the preparation of (A); (3) a silane compound (Ib) of formula (RaO)(RbO)(RcO)Si-A-Z-C(=O)-CHR1-S-C(=S)-OR, useful in the preparation of (A); (4) the preparation of (Ia) comprising addition of xanthate anions (IIa) of formula ROCS2- to a silane compound (IIIa) of formula (RaO)(RbO)(RcO)Si-A-Ar1-CH(R1)-X; (5) the preparation of (Ib) comprising reaction of a silane compound (IVb) of formula (RaO)(RbO)(RcO)Si-A-ZH with halide compound of formula X1-C(=O)-CH(R1)-X to obtain a silane compound (IIIb) compound of formula (RaO)(RbO)(RcO)Si-A-Ar1-CH(R1)-X followed by addition of (IIa) to (IIIb); (6) the use of (A) in the preparation of mineral particles grafted by polymeric chains, where the process comprises contacting the mineral particles having modified surface, an ethylenically unsaturated monomer and a source of free radicals; (7) mineral particles grafted by polymeric chains; (8) a polymeric composition comprising the mineral particles grafted by polymeric chains; and (9) a composition comprising a solvent having a rheology modified by mineral particles grafted by polymeric chains.
