Thermal welding and cutting procedure for complex films based on synthetic materials e.g. for supple packaging employs two jaws, one angled and one flat

The procedure, especially for use in the production of supple packaging, employs two heated jaws (9, 10) of a hard material such as tempered steel or tungsten carbide. One of the jaws has an angled profile (14) with a preferable angle (A) at its tip of between 100 and 120 degrees, and the other has a flat surface (18) facing the first. During the welding/cutting procedure the two jaws are first brought together on either side of two films (21, 22) to be joined with an initial pressure sufficient to weld them, and then at an increased pressure to cut them along the middle of the weld line. The movement of the two jaws can be controlled electro- mechanically, especially by an electric motor connected to a screw and nut mechanism, or mechanically, by a toggle joint.
