The locking system for the back of a car seat comprises a central plate (11) mounted on the seat and a ring (20) mounted on the back which can pivot about the central plate. A catch (29a) mounted on the central plate swivels between a position where it fits into a recess (23) in the inner periphery of the ring, locking the seat in the upright position, and a position where the back can be pushed fully down. It can also engage with teeth (28) on another section of the inner periphery to lock the back in an intermediate position. An independent claim is included for car seats fitted with the locking system.
