The method involves attributing a discrimination parameter, by using a router e.g. border gateway protocol (BGP) router, upon reception of one route, when route dropping does not manage to discriminate routes. The parameter represents the chronological order of receiving the route by the router. The route represents a destination network address and a set of route characteristics. One of the routes is selected based on the attributed parameter, before a selection of the route based on a network address of the router, where the selected route corresponds to that whose reception is earliest. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a router guiding data packets that traverse the router (2) a route selection program comprising program code instructions for the execution of stages of a route selecting method (3) a storage medium readable by a router and storing a route selection program comprising program code instructions for the execution of stages of a route selecting method.
