The lifeline system for use by people at altitudes, for work or recreation, comprises a cable (2) supported by brackets (3) attached to e.g. a wall. A second cable (11) is attached to a safety belt on a user and to the base (10) of a slide ring (8). This has a vertical slit (7) in its top, staggered from its axis of symmetry, which allows it to pass cable support arms (9) on the brackets.
