The system has a steering shaft (3) and two sections extending along an axis (A). An inflatable safety cushion is arranged on a steering wheel and is deployed when a vehicle is subjected to an impact. The sections are mounted in a rotating manner around the axis in a support of the shaft. A rotation locking device (40) locks rotation of the shaft with respect to the support, when the vehicle is subjected to the impact by modifying rheological e.g. magneto-rheological, properties of a fluid.
