The method involves receiving a data transmission binary signal (RxD) subjected to phase jitter, and generating oscillator signals (P0-P7) approximately at same median frequency and having distinct phases. A state of each oscillator signal is sampled to the appearance of fronts of the binary signal, and a random number is formed from the states of each oscillator signal. A value of the random number is a function of the position of the binary signal with respect to fronts of the oscillator signals. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for generating a random number (2) an integrated circuit including a random number generation circuit.
