The system (1) has an electronic control unit (2) to detect current (Ih, Il) circulating in communication wires (4a, 4b). A sensor unit (3) has an electronic accelerometer to detect an acceleration generated during collision of a vehicle against another vehicle, and varies the current based on an output data of the accelerometer. The control unit calculates a sum of the current and compares the sum to a preset level to detect the output data. The control unit calculates a difference between the current and detects a failure in the wires when the difference is higher than another preset level. An independent claim is also included for a method of activating a safety device for a passenger in a vehicle.
