The device has four cylinders including four inlet and exhaust valves actuated by fluid pressure, where four disconnecting mechanisms (20-23) are provided for disabling the respective valves. A secondary circuit (5) connects a controlled solenoid valve to the mechanisms. An auxiliary supply unit (30) supplies fuel to the secondary circuit during non actuation period of the mechanisms. The auxiliary supply unit has a check valve (34) which maintains the pressure in the auxiliary supply unit below a threshold pressure.
