The method involves storing an entity identity in a physical device e.g. chip card (6), where the identity is associated to a public key device of asymmetric keys carried by the physical device and is determined based on a specific identifier of the device. A certificate relating the identity and the public key device is generated by the device by utilizing a private certification key stored in an inviolable memory of the device. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method of authenticating a cryptographic key (2) a device for certificating cryptographic keys (3) an authority for certificating cryptographic keys.
