The method involves generating an inert gas and diffusing the generated inert gas into inflammable zones (1) e.g. engine compartment, of a motor vehicle. The inert gas generation and the gas diffusion are performed in a permanent manner during utilization periods of the motor vehicle. The inert gas is generated by using polymeric fiber type air separation membrane (2) that comprises an inlet (A) that is supplied with air from an air system in the vehicle and/or from air taken from the exterior of the vehicle for the membrane. An independent claim is also included for a motor vehicle.
