Use of a copolymer of styrenic monomer and carboxylic diacid with ethylene unsaturation, as agent to depigment and/or to bleach the skin, preferably to eliminate the pigmentary spots, age spots and/or as anti-pigmenting agent. An independent claim is included for a cosmetic process to depigment and/or to clear up skin having pigmentation spots, comprising applying a composition containing the copolymer in a medium, on the skin, where the composition is free from hydrophilic active ingredient sensitive to oxidation. ACTIVITY : Dermatological. MECHANISM OF ACTION : Melanogenesis modulator. The ability styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer to modulate the melanogenesis was tested in human co-culture. The results showed that the copolymer exhibited an IC50 value of 60 mu M.
