The device has a rod (4) with a circular section and a sheath (5) comprising a rectilinear pipe (6) opening out similar to that of the rod for slidingly receiving a portion (7) of the rod between top and bottom positions of the rod. A curve of the rod portion and a length of the pipe are such that the rod is in a locked contact against the pipe. The curve of the rod portion has a radius crossing from the bottom part of the rod to the top part such that a locking effort between the rod and the pipe in the top position is less than that between the rod and the pipe, in the bottom position. An independent claim is also included for a sheath of a device for assembling a headrest on a backrest of a motor vehicle seat.
