The source has a clock (12) generating synchronization information of a destination address and a packet formation stage forming sequence of packets of size larger than a data packet network to carry the information to a slave synchronization source i.e. destination node (7). The formation stage is controlled by a packet size controller that controls the size of the packets. A time stamping stage inserts transit times deriving the information that is generated by the clock, in the sequence of packets. An output stage transmits the sequence of packets to the respective times on the network. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a combination of master and slave synchronization sources for extracting synchronization information from a data packet (2) a method of transmitting synchronization information.
