The method involves acquiring a description signal (CCED) of a cellular environment of a mobile telephone at a location where the mobile telephone is detected. Timing advance (TA1-TA3) and an identity of cell such as mobile country code, are extracted from the signal of base stations (SB1-SB3) such as base transceiver station (BTS), of a cell, where the signal is received by the mobile telephone. A position of the telephone is calculated with respect to a known position of the base stations by a service center (CS), and a geographical position (IG) of the telephone is identified. An independent claim is also included for a equipment for locating a mobile telephone.
