A method of estimating the noise power spectrum FLAN Ô /FLA (k,t) in an observed noisy signal having a power spectrum X(k,t) comprising the steps of: (a) Receiving and storing the noisy signal for T time frames; (b) for a frequency k sorting the frames X(k, t) such that X(k, t0) & X(k,t1) &ÒÒÒ& X(k,tT-1) and obtaining a noise estimate Ç(k,t) wherein the noise estimate is calculated as the quantile EMI ID=2.1 HE=8 WI=34 LX=1043 LY=816 TI=UI PC; (c) applying a recursive function to Ç(k,t) in order to generate FLAN Ô /FLA(k,t), the recursive function being arranged so as to reduce fluctuations in the noise estimate Ç(k,t). Also, a method of saving processing power by only updating odd frequency bands for one time frame, and only updating even frequency bands for the next time frame.
