Non-planar ground surface for a monopole antenna

A monopole antenna comprises a radiating element 42, 52 and a non-planar ground surface 40, 54 where at least one edge region 47, 58 of the ground surface has a slope which is displaced, relative to that of at least one other ground region 41b, in a direction away from the radiating element 42, 52. The radiating element 42, 52 may be an ultra-wideband planar monopole element with a tapered shape with a feed point at the narrow end. One or both of the sloping edges may have a slow wave structure consisting of a log periodic series of commonly shaped serrations. A V-shaped notch may be located in the edge of the element opposite the feed point to create symmetrical lobes. A number of different ground surface region configurations for a monopole antenna are proposed. Methods of making such an antenna are also claimed. The antenna may be used in a portable device for communications involving an impulse transceiver.
