Wave powered generator which scoops water from wave crests and harnesses the potential energy collected

A wave powered generator comprises basins 9 which capture the upper section of a wave (E), holds the basin 9 until the crest has passed (D), and then allows the basin to drop into the wave trough (E). As the basin and water drops, it drives a hydraulic pump (5, figure 4) which provides hydraulic fluid to either a generator 3 or a pumped storage scheme (not shown). After the basin has dropped, it is allowed to tilt to unload the water (A), and then surf up the crest of the next wave (B). A series of such devices may be held between the hulls of a catamaran type vessel 1. There may be gauges (13, figure 4) to monitor the wave profile and control the basins appropriately.
