DROP IN FULLY REDUNDANT, WORKSTATION-BASED DISTRIBUTED PROCESS CONTROL SYSTEM

PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drop requiring no additional hardware, which conventionally used in each system drop for observing a system and executing other control functions, nor software related to the hardware. PSOLUTION: A distributed process control system drop for controlling the operation of an industrial process includes a first workstation, which runs to operate continuous process control software for analyzing input information provided from the industrial process and to generate output information to be given to the industrial process. A second workstation connected with the first workstation via a data highway normally runs in a backup mode and also performs the same analysis as the first workstation to generate backup output information. A monitoring function associated with the second workstation detects a failure in the first workstation and transfers control of the industrial process to the second workstation if a failure occurs in the first workstation.
