PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steel wire rod to be mechanically descaled, which has an improved exfoliation easiness of the scale that originates in a remaining compressive stress produced in a hot-rolled wire rod, specifically, keeps the reliable adhesiveness of the scale while the hot-rolled wire rod is cooled or stored/transported, and makes the scale easily exfoliated when the scale is mechanically removed.;SOLUTION: The steel wire rod to be mechanically descaled includes 0.05 to 1.2 wt.% C, (hereinafter merely referred to as%), 0.01 to 1.5% Si, and controlled elements of 0.02% or less P, 0.02% or less S and 0.005% or less N; has an Fe₂SiO₄ (fayalite) layer formed so as to contact with an iron matrix side of the scale which has been formed in a hot rolling step; and has the compressive stress adjusted to 200 MPa or less, which has been formed in the hot rolling step and remains in the scale.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
