PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide brake equipment capable of holding an elevator car of an elevator installation standstill with small operation force, and capable of braking the elevator car in the case of emergency.;SOLUTION: This invention relates to a guide rail 7 of the elevator installation, the brake equipment of the elevator installation, and the method for guiding, holding and braking the elevator installation. The brake equipment has a brake lining 12 which co-operates with a brake surface 11, advantageously with the brake surface 11 of the guide rail 7, for the purpose of the braking and holding. The brake surface 11 has at least one longitudinal wedge groove or wedge elevation which is oriented in the braking direction and on which the brake lining 12 acts in case of need.
