PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent noises in an apparatus for retaining the position of shims for a variable valve-characteristic mechanism position adjusting apparatus of an internal combustion engine with a shim holder.;SOLUTION: A shim engaging groove 37d is relatively rotated with respect to a pick-up portion 50b, by shifting a lost-stay 37 from (A) to (B) on a cam carrier 17, and the pick-up portion 50b is caused to abut against two opposing inner surfaces within the shim engaging groove 37d. Thereby, it becomes impossible for a shim 50 and the lost-stay 37 to be apart from or to be in contact with each other at a portion where they abut against each other, thus the generation of noises can be prevented. The lost-stay 37 has a function of keeping the contact between an input portion and an intake cam by imparting an energizing force to a spring retainer 30e that is situated at an input portion of an intervening drive mechanism, along with the function of the shim holder.
