PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new oligothiophene-based liquid crystal compound and a columnar liquid crystal material. PSOLUTION: The dumbbell type oligothiophene derivative has a phenyl group-containing aromatic core part in which phenyl groups each containing a dialkoxy substituent group at least at the m-position are bonded to both terminals of the central core part of an oligothiophene backbone as shown formula (1) and a terminal meltable part composed of a dendritic flexible alkoxy group.
