PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a user to efficiently perform the retrieval of his or her desired document image data by a simple operation in an image retrieval device in which input document image data are accumulated and stored in a storage means so as to be retrieved. PSOLUTION: Inputted and stored document images 301 of respective pages are divided into a plurality of regions 1 to 5 according to attributes of an image included therein, and layout analytic data of respective regions are generated. The image data of respective pages are classified so that the image data can belong to any of a plurality of clusters based on the analytic data. The representative images of the layout of one page in respective clusters are displayed in the case of retrieval. A user selects and designates the representative image whose layout is the closest to the layout of the page of a document image to be retrieved from among those stored by the user himself or herself.
