PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a breathing apparatus and breathing method used for adjusting the controlled positive pressure in the patient's airway by detecting flow limitation from analysis of inspiratory flow waves. PSOLUTION: When a sufficient period of apnea occurs, whether the patient is in apnea or disconnection with a pressure generator is judged. If an average flow 186 is larger than a predetermined value 190, a patient disconnection condition is generated and the pressure is changed to an absolute predetermined level and stands by for breathing restoration. If the average flow is lower than a threshold value, it indicates real apnea. When fluctuation of cardiac rate is detected, the apnea is classified as central apnea 194. In response to that, CRAP is raised by algorithm different from one used for obstructive apnea or not changed and held 196.
