PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound useful as an asymmetric catalyst giving an optically active epoxy resin in high asymmetric yield from an olefin having no neighboring functional group. ;SOLUTION: This new compound is expressed by formula I (W1 to W4 are each H, a 1-4C alkyl, phenyl or a group coordinable with manganese; Y1 to Y4 are each H, a 1-4C alkyl, phenyl, naphthyl or the like), e.g. a compound of formula II. This new compound is obtained by reacting a compound of formula III with 0.2 to 2 mol. equivalent (s), a base on the compound of formula III, of compound of formula IV, pref. in a solvent (e.g., ethanol, acetonitrile) at -20°C to the boiling point of the solvent to yield an imine compound, dissolving or suspending the imine compound in a solvent such as ethanol, reacting the imine compound with 0.5 to 10 mol. equivalent (s), based on the imine compound, of a manganese compound, pref. at -20°C to the boiling point of the solvent, followed by, optionally, treatment such as air oxidation or the like.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
