PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a primary amide derivative amt to selectively convert only the amino group of an aminodiol into the N-acylate derivative by reacting the aminodiol with a fatty acid alkyl ester in an alcohol not crystallizing at a room temperature and having a relatively high boiling point as a solvent. ;SOLUTION: This method for producing a primary amide derivative of formula II comprise reacting an aminodion of formula I(R¹ is a 11-19C saturated linear aliphatic hydrocarbon with a fatty acid alkyl ester of the formula: R² COOR³ (R² is a 9-19C linear aliphatic hydrocarbon which may have a hydroxyl group at the 1-position: R³ is a lower alkyl) in the presence of a basic catalyst in an alcoholic solvent (preferably a 3-8C alcohol, especially n-butanol), while the lower alcohol by-produced during the reaction is distilled out from the reaction system. Thus, the objective product useful as a basic material for cosmetics having moisture-retaining effects in skins can be obtained in a high yield.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
