PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preparing an α-hydroxycarboxylic acid ester from formaldehyde or a formaldehyde-containing compound of its precursor in one step.;SOLUTION: The method for preparing an α-hydroxycarboxylic acid ester comprises reacting formaldehyde or a formaldehyde-containing compound which decomposes under the reaction conditions to form formaldehyde with an alcohol in the presence of a metallic compound catalyst. This method enables the simple, inexpensive, one-step production of α-hydroxycarboxylic acid esters which are very useful as intermediate raw materials or polymer raw materials for various products such as drugs, cosmetics, perfumes, and agricultural chemicals from formaldehyde or the formaldehyde-containing compound of its precursor.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
