PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the nonflammable subject polymer suitable as lubricants for plastic working, for cutting and, etc., and hardly having a fear of causing environmental pollution by specifying a substituting degree of carboxymethyl groups per anhydrous glucose residue. ;SOLUTION: This water-insoluble or water-swelling carboxymethylcellulose for an aqueous lubricant composition is obtained by regulating the substituting degree of carboxymethyl groups per anhydrous glucose residue so as to be 0.01-0.4. The average particle diameter of the objective carboxymethyl cellulose(CMC) is preferably regulated so as to be 0.5-10 μm to improve the dispersion stability. Further, the CMC is preferably formed into an alkali metal salt to provide excellent dispersion stability, preservation stability and lubrication activities. A sodium salt is most preferable in the alkali metal salt because the sodium salt is excellent in price/performance. When an aqueous lubricant composition used as a working oil is prepared, the weight ratio of the water- insoluble or water-swelling CMC particles to water is regulated so as to be (2:98) to (10:90). When the CMC is used as a gear oil, the weight ratio of the CMC particles to water is regulated so as to be (5:95) to (25:75).;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
