PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cylinder injection internal combustion engine wherein a desired mixture layer is well formed around an ignition plug while suppressing an increase in the weight of a piston and the degradation of a compression ratio. PSOLUTION: The internal combustion engine 1 comprises a combustion chamber 2 in which an injector 6 for directly injecting fuel, an inlet valve Vi and an exhaust valve Ve are provided and in which the piston 10 is reciprocated to generate power. On the top of the piston, a plurality of cavities 12a-12c are arranged stepwise side by side along the direction of the flow of the fuel from an inlet side to an exhaust side.
