PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To minimize scattering ultrasonic wave coming from the circumference of a bone in quantitative measurement while supplying a uniform broad area ultrasonic signal.;SOLUTION: An ultrasonic transmission unit (18) is positioned in opposition across a measurement region from an ultrasonic receiver unit. The transmission unit includes a means for independently transmitting ultrasonic waves from the first and second parts of a transmission aperture. A controller communicates with the ultrasonic transmission unit to alternately transmit ultrasonic waves from only the first part (24) of the transmission aperture for the quantitative measurement (a) and from the both of first and second parts (24 and 26) of the transmission aperture so as to provide a broad illumination for preparing an image (b).;COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
